Pop and Politics

“Mixing pop and politics, he asks me what the use is” as Billy Bragg sings in the first song below. It was sometimes surreal, especially in the 1980s, to see groups you would never expect going heavy and political, from The Human League’s “The Lebanon” to Kim Wilde’s “Cambodia”.

Well, there was a lot going on, from Mrs Thatch to Northern Ireland to Nelson Mandela still being locked up.
Has there ever been a Right Wing protest song?

So much to choose from, some with hilarious lyrics, but here is a selection of the good, the bad and the ugly political pop music videos available on YouTube:-

1. Billy Bragg – Waiting For The Great Leap Forwards

2. U2 and Pavarotti (Passengers) – Miss Sarajevo

3. Morrissey – Interesting Drug

4. The Pet Shop Boys – It’s Alright

5. The Jam – Going Underground

6. Kirsty MacColl – Walking Down Madison

7. The Cranberries – Zombie

8. Wham! – Wham Rap!

9. Red Box – For America

10. The Boomtown Rats – Banana Republic
